Foto Friday | + a little about marriage

Someone asked me last night if marriage was like it's displayed in Hollywood Movies. Of course they didn't really believe it that, nevertheless it got me thinking. How much of what we perceive of the world is built on what the media has shared with us? How have we come to trust this black box in our living room and not reach out to talk to people who have been there, done that.

The truth is marriage is so far from how Hollywood depicts it one could say it might not be the same category at all! Marriage is so much more than physical attraction, shiny rocks and new things (even thought I like those too). It's so much more then parties and coordinated His and Hers outfits and cute little puppies. Marriage is a team. Possibly in every aspect of the word.

Team Tomeoni. Occasionally, that's what I call us. It helps shift the focus from me (I know, why would I want to do that?) and onto us. I know this is so clich̩, but marriageРor life in generalРis about the little things, the everyday. It's about dealing with dramaРtogether. It's about meetings regarding money, meetings about meetings, about trips, feelings, expectations, unmet expectations and the list continues. It's about discussing, deciding the route and cheering each other through that decision 'till it's complete. Even if it was not your first choice. Marriage is also about intimacy, tears, laughter, silent moments, listening, holding, screaming, compromising, working, chores, exciting and unexciting moments. I can't express how much better marriage is in real life then on TV. Really, marriage is nothing like the movies and I believe we are all better for it.

So, when on our way to Boise last weekend my teammate asked me if I would like to pull over to take a photograph. I agreed wholeheartedly because in a world full of beauty, shiny rocks and new things all I really need is my normal, everyday tree.

Here's the 2008 version of the trees if you missed it from last time.

Big smiles and cheers for Team Tomeoni.

Sneak Peek | Kali and Ethan's Boise Wedding

I'd be lying if I said anything other then the fact this was a busy week and a half. Scratch that. A busy last 6 months but I don't want to pull history into this.

Last weekend I was so happy to be a part of my friends wedding in Boise, Id. What you say... I thought you were in Seattle, WA last week? I was. I traveled to both in one week. For the record– yes– I am crazy and will do anything to spend quality time with the people I love including traveling ridiculous distances in a short amount of time. Silly? Maybe. Totally worth it? YES!

I wanted to share this rockin' portrait of Kali and Ethan on their wedding day. Yes, this is Boise... I can't wait to share more! The happy couple is enjoying a week in Hawaii. Jealous? I know I am.

Hubba hubba. Can't wait to share the rest!

Foto Friday | Weekend Trees

This is where I'll be this weekend.

This was taken on the way to Boise, Idaho last year (I know, I'm resurrecting the image). If you've been to my place you have seen the huge portrait of this above my fireplace. I love it! I really do. I might be tempted to have Josh pull over on the 84 to take a 2009 version.

This is the crazy life I have. I thought after a busy summer I'd be twiddling my thumbs in October... but I have to admit I'm addicted to change and this crazy schedule of mine keeps life interesting. Maybe the twiddling thumbs will be saved for November?

So, If you think of me this weekend I'll be zooming past the weekend trees above on my way to photographing a beautiful wedding in Boise, Idaho. I can't believe how blessed life can be.

Big Smiles for Foto Friday!

Christy and Kirk | Portland Portraits

I'm a fan of Christy because she has red hair (among many other reasons). There is a underlying understanding redheads have between one another. Sort of like a secret club where we all have the password. A sisterhood really. I'm willing to bet we had similar nicknames in Jr. High and as well as other common problems such as wondering if a certain outfit would clash with our hair color. I know it deep down though the topic has never presented itself verbally.

I also found something I really relate to with Kirk– his birthday is on Christmas. My husband's birthday is the day after. I get this... I get that it's hard to figure out what to buy for one holiday yet alone two. I get that birthday wrapping paper is totally essential to identify a certain gift as a birthday and another as Christmas. I get that. I get the need to have a special distinction for those who are so lucky to have birthday and Christmas at the same time of year. I get it.

Christy and Kirk are a wonderful, fun-loving couple to photograph. Thanks for exploring downtown Portland with me, making me laugh, and for dressing so darn cute! I'm willing to bet they have many unspoken understandings between the two of them as husband and wife. Yay for updated cute pictures of the two of you.

And without further they are together.

I love this grungy one.

I love how these images came together. I can imagine these as a series on their wall at home.

The End!

Baby Jeevan | 6mo Portraits

I just got back from Seattle a few hours ago. If you are wondering why you never heard of this before we must not be friends on facebook or on twitter. You should fix that. Like I was saying, it was great. I really love Seattle and I really love the NW in the fall time. I'm from California and the idea of the land turning bright shades of gold and orange while not being lit with fire is quite astounding. I was surprisingly engaged then entire drive up the 5 with leaves and catch up phone conversations I was having on my cell. However, Seattle has come and gone.

This little munchkin is now 6 months old! I can't even believe it. You might remember him from here... or maybe in his mommy's tummy but today he's 6 months old.

Don't you just want to squeeze him?

I mean really, how darling is this outfit and expression?!

I can't wait to show mom and dad!

Happy Thursday :)

Foto Friday | Portrait with Flash

WARNING: Not looking like my typical work, and it's weird/good. It's been a crazy week around here. Hence the reason Foto Friday is almost Foto Saturday. Blah, blah, blah... life is busy. However, I wanted to break out of my box a little bit. Stretch my legs a little... creativity speaking.

I drove down to Kim's place this week and we had a little off camera flash fun. It's totally not how I usually shoot but I have to admit I've vibing with it. can you believe this is Kim's yard! But I would love your feedback on the images. Tell me your thoughts.

In the image on left I'm using the flash to create the look of a sun flare without having one. Loving this trick for our cloudy Portland days....

In the image on the right I'm exposing for the sky and lighting my subject with flash.

Well, let me know what you think. Thanks and happy weekend!

Flannary and Tom | Seattle Wedding

Flannary and Tom. I was so excited to photograph their wedding... as well as a little nervous. I was working with some amazing Seattle vendors and really wanted to put my best foot forward. I was honored to work with Heather from A Sharp Occassion, Steve at the Sunset Club, Flowers by Midnight Blossom, and the show-stopping wedding dress from Luly Yang.

Flan and Tom's wedding had to be unique and special to them. The one word I remember Flan saying over and over. Unique. I have to say, I think they succeeded. Details ranged from the sibling bridal party, gorgeous ribbon covered dress, unique fishing box proposal, father daughter polka dance and the cutting of the pie... they succeeded. I had a blast at their wedding and I know their guests did too! I think everyone reached the photo booth cause that thing was packed all night.

Flan and Tom-- Congrats. I know you have many more adventurous chapters of your life to create. Congratulations to you two!

Getting ready was so calm with just Flan's big sister helping out. I know they will cherish that time with each other.

The handsom groom. He was so good and patient :) Thanks Tom!

The first look....

The morning of the wedding I knew I was going to be spending some time with Tom and Flan downtown for a few– like I mentioned eariler– unique wedding photos of them. The grand plan was to get ready, get married and hop downtown for a few... then party. Knowing this I popped into Luly Yang to see if I could bring them by for a few fun shots in the showroom. What did we end up with... putting them in a storefront window. I know! You better bet I was stoked. So, at this point they have been married for about 10 minutes.

Luly herself has a cameo in the image below.

Back to the Sunset Club.

Here are the very pretty details.

And they arrive!

I'm telling you... The photo booth was a huge success!

And I'll end with a darling mother son dance.

Congratulations to Tom and Flan!

Foto Friday | Photography Assistant

Yesterday it came to my attention Foto Friday would be in a few hours and I had nada. I'm kinda starting to wonder what I've got myself into– a new image every Friday. A NEW one. It's really easy for me to pull interesting stuff out of the archive but I really want to keep this fresh.

While I was wasting time on facebook, like most of us do, I decided to thumb through my pictures on MY profile. This year I am guilty of not uploading personal photos. How tragic! I was kinda curious what I would find 'cause I don't keep track. I skimmed some photos from last winter I realized that my poor little photo assistant has been neglected. She is truly amazing and I couldn't imaging this office with out her. She's my mascot, my smile and my lunch buddy. I don't have a "water cooler" office area where I can chat about my day like a lot of other people, but what I do have is a companion during office hours. Well, and off office hours... but really when you work for yourself who can really tell the difference?

Oh little Persay. I love you and couldn't imagine the day to day activities without you. I don't particularly love it when I trip over you or when you follow me at lunch but what I do love is your snuggle on my lap at 5:30pm telling me the day is over, your constant company and your undying love even if I don't give you treats. Persay, thanks for being so ridiculously funny... I mean really, what dog still sleeps in a basket? You do! Thanks for being the best office assistant ever.

However, I'm willing to guess that my little photo assistant doesn't share the same admiration for productive office days. Can't have it all, I guess.

Who's your office buddy?

Big Smiles,
